When the temperature drops, most of us reach for a warm coat, take hot showers, and cozy up indoors. But for many in underserved communities, winter is not just uncomfortable, it’s dangerous.
Access to basic hygiene essentials like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, and clean socks isn’t just about feeling clean, it’s about health, dignity, and safety. And in the colder months, the risks are amplified.
Without proper hygiene:
Skin becomes more prone to infection from the dry, harsh air.
Colds and flu spread more rapidly in shelters and encampments.
A lack of clean clothes or menstrual products forces individuals to miss work or school.
That’s where CareKits come in. These simple hygiene kits are filled with basics we often take for granted, and they make an outsized impact. Each kit is a message: We see you. We care.
At CareKit Community, we believe that compassion isn’t seasonal—but the need certainly is. In the winter, our hygiene drives focus on cold-weather essentials like:
Lip balm and lotion to protect dry skin
Thick socks and hand warmers for those without shelter
First aid supplies for those with limited access to medical care
Our mission is to mobilize volunteers of all ages to pack and distribute CareKits to shelters, outreach teams, schools, and community organizations across the region.
How You Can Help
Donate travel-sized hygiene products or warm accessories.
Host a packing party with your school, faith group, or friends.
Start a CareKit chapter in your community.
Let’s make sure that no one has to face winter alone—or without the dignity of basic care.
